Why People Choose to Leave the US Luxury for India

Skilled and educated individuals often find themselves questioning whether the United States is the best place to pursue their dreams. As India continues to emerge as a major global power, it offers a unique blend of opportunities that can enhance one's lifestyle in various ways. This article explores the reasons why many choose to leave the luxurious life in the US and opt for a more fulfilling life in India.

The American Dream and Its Challenges

Once upon a time, the American dream promised a life filled with luxury, opportunity, and freedom. However, as the nation has evolved, the reality of living in the US has changed. Today, the American dream is losing its lustre as the country becomes an increasingly dystopian, dysfunctional, and rigged system. From the perspective of some, the US has devolved into a corporatocracy where the rich get richer and the middle class struggles to survive day-to-day.

Thirty years ago, when the author married an American wife, the idea of relocating to the US was appealing. However, today, if they ever had to leave Israel, they would prefer several other countries over the US, even South Africa. This shift in perspective reflects the declining attractiveness of the US as a place to live and thrive. The author acknowledges the potential for the US to rediscover its soul and become the ‘society it could be,’ but for now, it is an option that many find less appealing.

The Cost of Living and Work-Life Balance

In the US, living in luxury is reserved for the wealthy. The average middle-class family struggles to make ends meet, and those less fortunate often live in deplorable conditions. The stark reality is that nearly 40 million Americans live below the poverty line. When you, or those who claim to understand the American lifestyle, speak of living in luxury, it is important to recognize that this often pertains to the privileged few, while the majority of Americans struggle with basic needs.

India, on the other hand, offers a much different picture. The cost of living is significantly lower, and the emphasis on work-life balance is much more pronounced. Many successful individuals moving from the US to India find that they enjoy an infinitely better work-life balance. The rewards of living in a country where one can achieve a healthier equilibrium between work and personal life are compelling to many.

Sense of Belonging and Diversity

One of the key factors that draw people to India from the US is the sense of belonging. In India, people are addressed by their names, and there is a greater acceptance of diversity. For many minority individuals in the US, the struggle to be accepted as part of the majority can be exhausting. Racism and discrimination in the US can be a constant source of stress and dissatisfaction. In India, people of color often feel more accepted and valued.

Moreover, India's rich diversity offers a unique experience. The country's landscape, culture, wildlife, and biodiversity provide a sense of awe and wonder that one might not find elsewhere. For many, the warmth and acceptance they receive in India, paired with the variety of life experiences, make it a highly attractive destination compared to the US.

Globalization and Its Impact

The global landscape has significantly changed over the past few decades, and this shift has influenced where people choose to live and work. As India has become a major player in the global economy, it presents a compelling alternative to the US. Globalization has created a more interconnected world, and for skilled individuals, opportunities in India can be just as rewarding as those in the US, if not more so, given the cost of living and work-life balance advantages.

For those who have experienced the rigidity and inequality in the US, the allure of a more inclusive and accepting society in India is enticing. The combination of lower living costs, a better work-life balance, and a sense of belonging makes India an attractive destination for many individuals who wish to leave the luxurious life in the US and embrace a more fulfilling alternative.

As globalization continues to reshape the world, the choice to leave the US for India becomes more relevant and compelling. While the American dream is still a motivating factor for many, the realities of life in the US are changing, making India a more appealing and viable option for those seeking a better quality of life.
