Surviving Tuberculosis: Personal Experiences and Recovery Journey

Living with tuberculosis (TB) is a challenging experience, as personal accounts often emphasize. This condition can be painful and life-altering, but with proper treatment, recovery is possible. In this article, we share the experiences of two individuals who battled TB and recovered. These stories highlight the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.

Global Perspective: Tuberculosis in the USA and Beyond

In the United States, 99% or more of tuberculosis patients are completely cured with proper treatment. However, in many parts of the world, resource limitations and lack of will lead to higher mortality rates. Tuberculosis remains a significant public health issue in regions with limited healthcare accessibility and funding.

Personal Story: Gitanjli's Battle with Tuberculosis

My name is Gitanjli, and I was diagnosed with TB in my C1-C2 vertebrae on September 8, 2021. My journey with TB was both terrifying and transformative. Previously, I was a healthy, active, and academically strong individual. However, a neck pain that persisted for months left me worried.

After consulting various treatments including physiotherapy, the pain intensified, leading me to undergo an MRI and a CT scan. Diagnosed with TB, began my medication immediately. Despite the side effects, including bedrest and the use of drugs like Steptomycin, I was relieved when my follow-up reports showed no neurological issues. After 2 months of complete bedrest and following my doctor's prescriptions, I was feeling better and had reached 60% recovery in 2 months. After 12 months, I am living a normal, healthy life, and my medications have dropped to a 18-month DOTS course.

While the initial two months were incredibly difficult for me and my family, my recovery is a testament to the effectiveness of TB treatment with strong support from loved ones. Recovery is possible, so don't be afraid. Write to me or comment if you need further details. DM me here on Quora.

Another Personal Story: A 25-Year-Old Survivor's Journey

As a 25-year-old survivor of TB, I want to share my personal journey to help others understand how TB affects one's life.

Starting in April-May 2021, I experienced a reduced appetite and weight loss, which was initially attributed to my sedentary lifestyle and online classes. However, the symptoms persisted, and I developed other symptoms such as fatigue, cough, and a fever. After multiple treatments and tests, including an X-ray, HRCT scan, sputum, and RT PCR, I was diagnosed with pulmonary TB.

The initial months were tough, with my body losing fat and my confidence diminishing. Despite the challenges, I completed the DOTs (Directly Observed Treatment) course, which came with significant side effects, including vomiting, joint pain, headaches, and skin issues. With the support of my family, I finished the course.

Recovery took time, but I regained my confidence and weight within 3-4 months. This disease taught me a valuable lesson: health is wealth. I now emphasize a healthy diet focusing on fruits and vegetables and avoid junk food. My continuous journey to recovery continues, and I am now sharing my experience to inspire others.
