In Which Era of Star Trek Would You Least Like to Live?

When considering the various eras of Star Trek, it's intriguing to examine the challenges and uncertainties each one presents. While the 32nd century of Star Trek: Discovery might seem at first glance to be the future of amazing technological advancements, it's actually the era that stands out as the one where one would least like to live. Let's explore why.

Technological Advancements vs. Uncertainty

The 32nd century brings with it the promise of newer technology, such as the spore drive and the potential to restore the Federation with the discovery of the "motherlode" of dilithium. However, these technological advancements coexist with a fragmented Federation, a lost sense of honour, and the rise of villains like Vice Admiral Matthew Dougherty and Admiral Edward Pressman, who acted against the UFP Charter and its citizens' fundamental rights. This combination of advanced technology and political instability makes the 32nd century a particularly challenging era to inhabit.

Other Challenging Eras in Star Trek

While the 32nd century is marked by these concerns, other eras in Star Trek history also present their own uncertainties and struggles:

22nd Century: The Xindi wars and the Romulan war 23rd Century: The Klingon war and the cold war with both Romulans and Klingons 24th Century: The Borg and Dominion wars

In each of these eras, the Federation faces significant challenges. However, the 32nd century's lack of cohesion and the rise of the Emerald Chain make it stand out as the era one would least like to live in. The Federation, which once stood as the epitome of unity and cooperation, now appears fractured and weakened by the loss of its traditional space travel advancements.

Preferences for Some Eras

Considering the various eras and their challenges, one might wonder about the appeal of certain areas. For instance, Kirk's and Archer's ships would be exciting to be part of, with Deep Space 9 also seeming like an interesting place to be. However, as for Picard's and Voyager's crews, they might be too straightforward or perhaps even a bit too chaotic at times.

Least Desirable Era: The 2050s and Beyond

The 2050s in Star Trek, culminating in World War III, seem the least desirable. This era is marked by the Eugenics War, a close second, and further conflicts like the Earth-Romulan War, the Federation-Cardassian War, and the Dominion War. These conflicts have catastrophic consequences, with the Eugenics War alone costing 600 million lives. Living through these apocalyptic events without the certainty of post-apocalyptic hope makes this period particularly undesirable.
