Exploring the First R and PG-13 Movies That Shaped My Young Years
For many of us, the journey to being a teenager is filled with a myriad of experiences that leave a lasting impression. This journey often involves our first encounters with more mature content, such as the first R-rated and PG-13 movies. These films can be pivotal in shaping our tastes and understanding of the world around us. In this article, I will delve into my personal experiences and the titles that first introduced me to these rating systems.
The Journey to R-Rated Movies
Before the rise of the rating system, I often frequented a legitimate theatre that showed a wide array of sophisticated foreign films. These films, often artsy and emotionally rich, left a lasting impact on my formative years. In my mid to late teens, I recall seeing George Girl, Belle Du Jour, and Teres Isabel, which were pivotal in changing my outlook for the better.
One specific memory that stands out is the movie My Tutor. This film held every element a teenager could want, making it a must-see for many of my peers. Another title I remember, though I can't recall the exact name, my curiosity has led me to question: Which title was the one that first introduced me to the world of R-rated movies within the comforts of my home?
Dad and the Logan Experience
My first encounter with an R-rated movie in the theatre was when my dad took me and the rest of my family to see Logan, the Hugh Jackman wolverine movie, when I was 12 years old. It marked a significant milestone in my journey towards understanding more adult content.
However, I must admit that I am not a fan of graphic or violent movies. As a result, I have only ever seen two R-rated movies in the theatre after turning 17: Somewhere About Mary and Paranormal Activity 3. My parents did not exactly "ban" me from watching R-rated movies, but I simply wasn't interested. In fact, I remember them occasionally encouraging me to watch one here and there before turning 17.
PG-13 Movies and My Developing Taste
PG-13 movies, on the other hand, are a bit of a mystery. The rating system was implemented when I was just a toddler, around 4 years old. I remember watching the 1989 Batman on my 9th birthday, but it was a movie I had seen at home, not in a theatre. When I first entered the theatre to see PG-13 movies, Kindergarten Cop might have been my first. However, I'm not entirely sure, as the 1980s and early 90s ratings were ...
In history class, I learned about ancient Greece, and a specific movie that left a profound impact on my understanding and appreciation of the subject matter was Perfect Movie. It is no surprise that this film, perhaps alongside other historical offerings, helped me gain a better understanding of this fascinating era.
At the age of 12, I had the pleasure of seeing 8 Mile in 2002. This film was the epitome of what an R rating could mean, to the point that my mother took me out halfway through the movie. However, my persistence ultimately won, as she brought me back to witness the full impact of the film. From the age of 10 to 15, I was deeply immersed in Eminem's universe and his story on screen.
Change in the Rating System
Looking back, the rating system was indeed different. My first R-rated movie experience in a theatre came from Soldier Blue, a film released in 1970 and best remembered for its title song performed by Buffy St. Marie. The theatre I went to was Bury, which often changed its name. It was likely the Essoldo at the time, but later became a bingo hall before being demolished. Today, a casino is on the site.
Even with these changes in ratings and theatre names, the impact of these experiences remains. This article aims to encapsulate my journey and the movies that played a key role in this journey.
