Explaining the Appearance of X-Men in the MCU

The introduction of X-Men characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) raises an interesting question: why have mutants never been mentioned in-universe until now? It's important to consider why such a dramatic change in the established narrative might occur and how it could be justified within the context of the MCU.

Why Not Explain It?

Often, in large cinematic universes, important elements have not been addressed until the right time to introduce them comes. This is not new to the MCU - many elements or characters, such as Nick Fury bringing up his adventure with Captain Marvel in the 1990s or the Ancient One’s off-screen activities, were only mentioned much later in the story.

Accepting that certain things haven't been addressed until they're relevant can make the narrative more fluid. Even as Steve Rogers never talked to Tony Stark about the Winter Soldier, and Odin kept it a secret for thousands of years, we, the audience, are not omniscient and do not have the right to know everything before it's appropriate to reveal it.

Explaining Mutants in the MCU

If an explanation is needed, the comics can provide a solid starting point. Charles Xavier has been running an academy for gifted youngsters for years, training them to live with their powers and keep their true nature hidden. This secrecy was not shared with the mistrustful and xenophobic world. An event would then come that reveals their secret, setting the stage for the first MCU X-Men film.

Exploring Speculation and Multiverse Concepts

Speculations about the multiverse presence can shed light on how X-Men could fit into the MCU timeline. Recent films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home have introduced the concept that there are multiple realities in the MCU. While some fans might argue for the inclusion of X-Men due to the multiverse, the writers need to ensure the storyline is compelling and not simply a cop out.

The MCU has already addressed the x-gene in various ways. For instance, the Wakanda Files book mentioned genetic oddities among the inhabitants of Sokovia, which made them ideal for Mind Stone experiments. We also know from WandaVision that the Mind Stone unlocked Wanda and Pietro’s latent powers. The Mind Stone played a significant role in the Snap that caused half the population to disappear.

Given this context, we might speculate that the x-gene was already active but lying dormant. When survivors of the 5-year blip returned to their cells having been altered by the Infinity Stones, especially the Mind Stone, their x-gene could have been awakened. An event, such as anger, pain, or an accident, could trigger the release of their powers, as seen with Monica Rambeau when she passed through the energy barrier.

Conclusion

The appearance of X-Men characters in the MCU can be explained through strategic narrative development and multiverse possibilities. Whether through a purely in-universe event or the notion of multiple realities, the writers can justify the introduction of mutants in a way that doesn't feel forced or convenient.

It's also worth noting that the current storyline of the MCU is already setting up scenarios where the awakening of latent powers can occur. Figures like Monica Rambeau serve as perfect examples and teasers for the introduction of X-Men concepts. As the narrative unfolds, these and other characters will likely play a pivotal role in explaining and integrating the X-Men into the MCU.
