Christians are not 'possessed' in the traditional sense, but they can be influenced by demonic activity. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God is in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.
This indicates that believers are protected by the Holy Spirit and can drive away demonic activity by maintaining their spiritual armor and praising God (Ephesians 6:10-20).
Scriptural Support for the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit
Scripture further supports the belief that the Holy Spirit indwells believers. In 1 Corinthians 3:16, we read, 'Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?' This is echoed in 1 Corinthians 6:19, where it is stated, 'Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own.'
The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit vs. Demon Possession
Likewise, in 1 Peter 1:18-19, it is written, 'For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.' This speaks to the idea that believers have been purchased with the blood of Christ and are part of a new creation.
Ongoing Spiritual Warfare
Christianity teaches that believers are engaged in a continuous spiritual battle against Satan and his demons. However, this battle is won not by fear or avoidance, but by faith and reliance on the Holy Spirit. The apostle John declares, 'Dear children, because you have trusted in the name of Christ and are continuing in the teaching of Christ, you have overcome the evil one. And he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world' (1 John 4:4).
Who is the 'he who is in you'? It is the Holy Spirit. Who is the 'he who is in the world'? It is Satan and his demons. Therefore, the Christian believer has overcome the world of demons, and there is no scriptural case for the demon possession of a believer.
By engaging in prayer, reading God's Word, and meditating on spiritual matters, Christians can strengthen themselves in their faith, resist demonic influence, and continue their path towards God's righteousness and growth.
