Can Dragon Fire Take Out a White Walker?
Can Dragon Fire Take Out a White Walker?
In Game of Thrones, the White Walkers are known to be vulnerable to two specific forms of attack: dragonglass and fire. While it is suggested that fire can kill White Walkers in the series, it primarily demonstrates this with normal fire, rather than specifically Dragonfire.
During the series, the effectiveness of ordinary fire is evident when the Night King is defeated; Arya Stark defeats him with a Valyrian steel dagger. Dragonfire, being a more potent and magical form of fire, would likely also be effective against White Walkers. However, the show does not explicitly depict the interaction between Dragonfire and White Walkers, leaving the question open for interpretation.
The Resistance of White Walkers to Fire
In contrast, the Night King and his generals, the White Walkers, are shown to pass through fire with ease. In episode 8x03, dragonfire is also shown to have no effect on the Night King, suggesting that it would likely apply to his generals as well. As a result, a White Walker is unlikely to be burned to ashes with any form of fire—whether it is the dragonfire from Drogon, or the exotic fire created by the Children of the Forest.
Dragonfire and Wights: Further Clarification
One might wonder if Dragonfire could be effective against White Walkers. We know that dragonfire destroys wights. During an incident at the Frozen Lake, the Night King was seen walking through dragonfire as if it were not there. This dragonfire is the only fire present, and it is evident that the wights, unlike the Night King, cannot withstand it. They were deliberately kept away from the dragonfire, likely because they cannot walk through or withstand it.
It appears that White Walkers generate body-cold, similar to how we generate body heat. Wights, belonging to the same lineage, are unaffected by conventional fire temperatures. They walk right through it, much like how the Night King walks through dragonfire. The resistance to fire is determined by the amount of cold generated by their bodies and the temperature of the fire.
However, if a White Walker were to encounter Dragonfire from Drogon, it is highly likely that the dragonfire would eventually cook the White Walker. With the ability to withstand conventional fire, the balance shifts toward the dragonfire. If Drogon were to attack the group consisting of the Night King and his White Walkers, only Drogon's horse in the foreground would be set on fire. The White Walkers further back would suffer damage if they stayed in the dragonfire, eventually catching fire and dying.
Therefore, while it is reasonable to infer that Dragonfire could effectively eliminate a White Walker, the series does not explicitly confirm this. The effective use of Dragonfire remains a matter of interpretation within the context of the Game of Thrones universe.
