Attending Gay Weddings: A Personal Perspective from Around the World

Ive been to quite a few already so yes, of course. Theyre usually a lot of fun too. Whether its attending a friend of a friend, or participating in a close family member’s celebration, the joyous nature of these events never fails to amaze me.

A Personal Experience of Gay Weddings

I already have and I will attend another one someday. I’m a dude who’s married to a guy. My husband’s best friend is a lesbian, and we’ve been to her wedding. Our oldest son is gay, so we'll attend the wedding when AJ and his fiancé marry in a few years. If any of our other kids or grandkids marry a member of the same sex, we'll be there as well, provided we’re invited. Love is love and it deserves a higher place in the world regardless of who’s involved.

Local Recognition of a Gay Wedding

Been there, seen it, done it. Even I got into the papers only a local paper, but it was the papers. A friend of a friend got married to her long-term partner, and I was the plus one of one of their friends. They were locally quite prominent citizens, so the wedding got into the papers. If you look closely, you can just see me in the background.

Cultural Perspectives on Gay Weddings

I am from Vietnam, and I have never participated in a gay wedding. However, I do know a story about the gay wedding of a famous couple that recently took place there. The two have been together for more than 10 years but only recently announced their relationship.

What is interesting about their relationship is that they describe it as a company consisting of 2 members signing a contract with each other. Therefore, many netizens claim to be employees of their company and express admiration for this couple. In Vietnam, same-sex marriage is in a gray area – not illegal but not recognized either. And yes, homophobia is still a thing. So, the couple played it smart and subtle. They called their wedding a celebration of a 10-year friendship and their honeymoon trip a ‘family vacation’.

The wedding received support from both sides' parents and their close friends. Both of them coincidentally secretly prepared a dance performance for each other, creating those gentle and positive vibes. Their story went viral in Vietnam's online community, illustrating that the warmth of love is just as strong in gay weddings as it is in heterosexual ones.

While the traditional idea of gay weddings might differ from conventional ones, the underlying warmth and joy of love are universally felt. These stories from around the world underscore the significance of celebrating love in all its forms, especially in an ever-changing global landscape.
