A Comparative Analysis: The Original Trilogy vs. The Prequels in Star Wars

The question of which era of Star Wars you prefer is one that often divides fans. The Original Trilogy (OT) and the Prequels each have their unique merits and flaws. Let's explore both to see which one stands out as more preferable.

Original Trilogy: Consistency and Coherence

My main issue with the Original Trilogy is the retcons that arise as the movies follow a linear storyline. George Lucas, the creator, did not have a complete plan for the full trilogy beforehand. As a result, there are inconsistencies that emerge from film to film. For instance, The Empire Strikes Back (ROTJ) is often considered the weakest film in both trilogies, while The Empire Strikes Back itself is regarded as a masterpiece.

Despite these issues, the OT does offer a coherent story, clear character arcs, and a mind-blowing plot twist with the revelation that Vader is Luke's father. This revelation, however, was a retcon of original plans. The twist, while groundbreaking, also introduces complexities that some viewers find challenging.

Prequels: Better Production Values and Character Development

The Prequels, on the other hand, benefit from superior production values and better technology. The visual effects and cinematography are miles ahead of the OT, making the Prequels more enjoyable from a visual standpoint. The Prequels also receive criticism for their dialogue, particularly the infamous Jar Jar Binks, but much less so with the character of Anakin Skywalker.

Michael B. Johnson's argument about Anakin's dialogue highlights a significant issue: Anakin's character development is overshadowed by his awkwardness in social situations. Fans who rewatch the Prequels with this in mind will likely find fewer flaws in his dialogue. He is a boy who has experienced unimaginable hardships, which explains his social awkwardness as he matures and eventually becomes Darth Vader.

Choreography and Action Sequences

The choreography in the Prequels is also a major highlight. Michael B. Johnson cites the battle between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker on Bespin as a phenomenal fight, ranking it among the top three of all time. The action sequences in the Prequels are smoother, more intricate, and visually stunning compared to the OT.

Concluding the Debate

The ultimate question to answer is: which trilogy would you be more likely to sit through and watch from start to finish without wanting to skip anything? For me, the answer is unequivocally the Prequels.

Even as an adult, I notice the flaws in the Prequels that I may not have recognized as a child. However, the overall product is of higher quality than the OT. While The Empire Strikes Back is the best in both trilogies, Return of the Sith is probably the best film in both trilogies. I can rarely sit through the entire OT without skipping many scenes, whereas I find myself more engaged with the Prequels, pausing only for specific moments in Return of the Sith.

In conclusion, whether you're a Rawr or a Jedi, the Prequels offer a more refined viewing experience that is often worth the time investment.
